Case 1: Excellence through Behaviour Based Safety
Case Description
In 2005 Zhimble was asked to help Yara reach the next level of safety performance by implementing a behaviour based safety program. By taking a people focused, pragmatic approach, making use of the existing systems of Yara a successful process was implemented whereby the Yara people support each other to work more safely. This project was recognized by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs as a best practice approach for Behaviour Based Safety. In 2009, Yara Sluiskil received the first Green Leaf award from the International Fertilizer Association for it's total HSE performance over a longer period of time.
Results:
Changing the game: “The strength of the BBS program is that it is lasting. And we have also discovered that BBS is more than safety alone. It’s about a culture change with a view to maximizing employee commitment, not just in the field of safety, but also in other aspects of the business process.”, says Marc Van Hijfte, Site manager Yara Sluiskil.
Leadership: “We see culture and leadership as the basis for improvement. In the inspiration meetings Zhimble already gave tools for effective leadership. After that we continued to develop the leadership of our employees.”, says Rob Verkerke, Change Manager and Project Manager Behaviour Based Safety
Social Innovation: “Safety used to be ordered from above. Now safety has become more of a personal responsibility”, says Jan Scheele, Production Coordinator in the shipping department

Case 2: Towards Industry Shaper
Case Description
In 2008 a new ambition was set for the Yara Group, whereby Yara sought to become an industry shaper by exploiting its strong position in expertise and operational excellence. This step could only be sustainably achieved through full participation of all people on site. With 600 people and predominantly traditional relationships between management and workforce this posed a major challenge. Employee participation programs did not lead to the desired results. Through a pragmatic approach, whereby connections between management and workforce were redefined and the strategic goals of Yara were brought close to the people, Yara is now on its way to becoming a true Industry Shaper - together.
Yara in the news:
On its road to becoming an Industry Shaper, Yara Sluiskil was selected as the site of choice for a major investment in a new urea plant. The first stone was laid by the Dutch Prime Minister, J.P. Balkenende. See the newsarticle and video for how Yara is making its next step.
